PLEASE COME TO OUR LUNCHEON!

The Susquehanna Valley Writers Workshop’s next conference will be a “down-sized” luncheon at Country Cupboard on Saturday, October 6th from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m. Our guest speaker will be Pastor Dave Weiss from Reading, PA.

Dave Weiss

Dave Weiss’s Presentation

“God and the Creative Process”

The first fact we know about God from the Bible and the first act we see Him do is “create.”

In the introduction to Jesus as the Word in his book of John, the first thing John tells us (other than Jesus’ eternal and divine nature) is that Jesus “created.” We’re also told that we are created in His image, that we’re His workmanship created on purpose for His purposes, and that we are His children. If you’re creative, it’s because God made you creative.

“Being creative” presents a multitude of questions:

How can we use our creativity to bring honor to our Creator?

How can we invite God into our creativity?

What is my creative mission?

What are the boundaries on Christian creativity?

Writer, artist, and pastor Dave Weiss will explore these questions and more in his presentation “God and the Creative Process.”

About Dave Weiss

Dave Weiss has been an artist as long as he can remember. When Dave came to Jesus, he began to seek ways to use his creative gifts to serve the Lord. The result of these efforts is a ministry called A.M.O.K. (Arts Ministry Outreach for the Kingdom), a ministry dedicated to using the arts to spread the gospel and to train up “creatives” to do the same.

Dave is the author of Running A.M.O.K.: Random Musings for the Creative Hands of the Body of Christ, he is a lesson writer for the youth ministry resource Interlinc, and he writes The AMOKArts Tribe blog.

As a speaker, Dave does a variety of creative arts presentations, youth retreats, and more, sometimes featuring live “performance” painting. He also shares the gospel by creating unique art videos, which he posts on his blog, on Youtube, and on other video sites.

Thank you, loyal writer friends who attended the 8th Susquehanna Valley Writers Workshop on October 8, 2011, at the Best Western Country Cupboard Inn, Lewisburg, PA. If you did not attend, scroll down to the last post and see what you missed! We had great speakers, great food, and great fellowship with intense workshops about a variety of genres.

Our next gathering will be on Saturday, October 6, 2012. For a break from our conference venue, we are planning to “downsize” by having only a luncheon at Country Cupboard from 11:30 to 1:30 pm with one speaker to challenge us in our writing ventures.

There will be a small registration fee of $20 (due before the luncheon), which will cover your cost for the huge Country Cupboard buffet and help us with expenses for our speaker. We always have much positive feedback about the time we share around the table discussing our writing projects and getting to know other authors with the passion to write.

We hope you’ll decide to join us for this short but sweet gathering of writers of any genre on October 6th, 2012.

In the meantime, sign up for my writers’ tips blog at www.marshahubler.wordpress.com where I share many tips about writing different genres, much of the information coming from past workshops, and join the Writers of Any Genre group on Facebook, where we discuss each other’s passions, hopes, dreams, and disappointments in the fascinating world of writing.

Happy writing!

FACULTY

1. Daniel Gasteiger, Lewisburg, PA - social networking expert: find out how to market yourself online most effectively

Daniel Gasteiger

Daniel Gasteiger’s book, Yes, You Can! And Freeze And Dry It, Too! – about preserving food – is a new title from Cool Springs Press. Why is this significant? Gasteiger landed the book contract through effective Internet Marketing (SEO) and Social Media Marketing. In real life, Gasteiger is a social media evangelist, teaching social marketing strategies at corporations, civic groups, economic development organizations, and conferences throughout the northeast.

Gasteiger began his career as the Macros and Technical Editor of Lotus Magazine. There, in the first years of the personal computer revolution, he taught highly technical concepts to non-technical audiences. His readers were people who bought IBM PCs so they could use the newfangled electronic spreadsheet called Lotus 1-2-3.

Gasteiger wrote hundreds of articles about personal computing and he spoke at dozens of trade shows, corporate offices, and user groups on behalf of the magazine. Subsequently, he authored or co-authored five books about computing and worked extensively as a programmer and software designer.

As an independent consultant and freelance writer, Gasteiger has handled marketing and advertising for most of his career. With the emergence of social media, he became a student of SEO and Social Media Marketing and he works with several Pennsylvania companies to build web presence and extend their marketing reach online. Gasteiger also leads classes in which he teaches writers how to become relevant in the emerging online publishing industry.

The traditional publishing industry is failing, Gasteiger says, because the Internet is flourishing. Social media has given rise to a new economy, and learning to participate effectively opens amazing opportunities for new and established writers.

Gasteiger’s social network knows him as Cityslipper. His premier blog is Your Small Kitchen Garden which draws more than 8,000 visitors each month—even when he treats the blog poorly. He invites you to visit at Your Small Kitchen Garden, to follow him on Twitter, to “Like” his Facebook page, to subscribe to his vlog on Youtube, and to explore social media with his class for writers on his Social Marketing Strategies blog.

Welcome writers of all genres.

This website will keep you informed of the past, present, and future events of the Susquehanna Valley Writers’ Workshop held every October at the Best Western/Country Cupboard Inn in Lewisburg, PA

The Susquehanna Valley Writers Workshop started back in 2004 when a group of writers in the Susquehanna Valley in PA decided to have their own conference instead of traveling great distances to attend others. Since the first workshop with one faculty member and 33 in attendance in a library social room, the conference has moved to the Best Western Country Cupboard Inn, Lewisburg, PA, and averages five on faculty and 60 conferees. Various genres are represented every year with paid private critiques, peer critique sessions, and workshops that challenge the conferees to hone their skills to the best of their ability.

Check the home page to see who is on faculty for our next conference planned for Friday and Saturday, October 7th and 8th, 2011.

I never knew how important social networking is to a writer until I took a class (once a week for two hours) on the subject this past fall into the spring of this year.
